Oil on canvas laid on panel, 71,5 x 70,5 cm, including frame 75 x 74 cm. Signed with monogram BH and signed and dated on the reverse Berta Hansson "avslutad våren 1989 i Stockholm". EXHIBITED Doctor Glas, 1990. Berta Hansson was a Swedish artist born in Jämtland. She studied with Leoo Verde, Brita Nordencreutz and at Otte Sköld's school of painting. Alongside Siri Derkert and Vera Nilsson, she is considered one of Sweden's most significant expressionist artists. Her break through was a solo exhibition in 1943 at the legendary gallery Färg och Form in Stockholm. Berta Hansson is known for her landscapes and flower paintings, with marked features, for her portraits, often depicting children, and during her last period of activity when her eyesight gradually deteriorated, a series of evocative and celebrated paintings in which birds fly against dark backgrounds. During her life Berta Hansson made several trips to Africa, which resulted in a number of interesting paintings. She met the Norrland painter and purist Helge Linden, whose color-conscious and atmospheric imagery strongly influenced her. After encouragement from Bror Marklund, during the 1970s she also created several sculptures, most notably in terracotta and bronze. Represented at, among others, Nationalmuseum in Stockholm, Moderna Museet in Stockholm, Museum Anna Nordlander in Skellefteå, Örebro County Museum and Östersund, Linköping and Umeå museums. In addition to painting and drawing, she also created a number of major public works. Has resale rights.
