Arita, “Winter Landscape at Sunrise.” The artist uses tree leaves to depict the seasonal scenery of Arita. His specialty is a technique known as the 'leaf technique', in which the veins of real leaves are used to create the appearance of intricate tree branches or mountain textures. Young leaves, such as magnolia, are pressed against unglazed pottery so that their vein patterns transfer onto the surface — much like a Japanese paper-dyeing or bleeding Kuresu effect. The resulting dark lines form the shapes of mountains when arranged carefully. This method captures both the seasonal atmosphere and the essence of the Arita landscape portrayed in the work. Signed by the artist on the base. Together with wooden box. 18cm x 18cm x 19cm. Ref: Born in Arita in 1936, Shumei Fujii began making pottery at the age of 15 and was selected for the Nitten (Japan Fine Arts Exhibition) no less than 15 times. He won many prizes including the Japan Ceramic Art Exhibition and the Kyushu Yamaguchi Ceramics Exhibition Minister of Education Award.
