Base in painted birch, straight legs and plain apron, recessed tabletop with checkerboard gonçalo alves veneer, two black-lacquered extension leaves, label marked R36124 - C MÖB and with pencil inscriptions, including arb 3886, height 75, diameter 100 cm, full length 220 cm. EXHIBITED The model was shown in May 1932 at Nordiska Kompaniet’s spring exhibition Modern Furniture Types, in the furniture department on the third floor of the department store at Hamngatan, Stockholm. HISTORY The table was designed by Axel Einar Hjorth in 1931 and formed part of a series of modern furniture types with a focus on functionality, practicality, and contemporary design, combined with NK’s high manufacturing standards – all offered at an attractive price point. The “Typenko” series, whose name likely represents a play on words or a portmanteau of “Type” and “NK”, attracted considerable attention when it was presented in spring 1932 at NK’s spring exhibition, located on the third floor of the store’s furniture department. Contemporary advertisements emphasised the company’s ambition for the models to suit all kinds of interiors: “Typenko is available for practically every type of interior – bedroom, gentleman’s room, hall, dining room, living room, even the office.” In period advertising illustrations, the table was shown in a dining room furnished with an upholstered easy chair, chairs with webbed seats, a sideboard, serving table and a side table – all from the same series. The furniture label on the present table, which in addition to the drawing number indicates its production date of November 1931, also suggests its original commission. Instead of a commission number, it bears the short designation “MÖB”, which typically denotes an internal order from NK’s own furniture department. This supports the hypothesis that the present table is the very example exhibited at the 1932 launch. LITERATURE Illustrated in Nordiska Kompaniet’s catalogue Furniture in Traditional and Modern Types, 1935.
