LITERATURE Burén Collection, Stockholms Auktionsverk, 2009, illustrated p. 93. Henri Michaux became famous both for his artistic talent and for his poetry and prose. After visiting Japan, China and India in the early 1930s, Asian culture became one of his biggest influences. His poetry as well as drawings, such as the present composition from 1959, shows influence from the philosophy of Buddhism and calligraphy. In the 40s and 50s, Michaux was associated with the Tachiste movement. He was a highly original visual artist and incorporated elements of calligraphy, asemic writing and abstract expressionism in his striking drawings. In 1978, The Museum of Modern Art in Paris and the Guggenheim Museum in New York had major shows of his work. Michaux was born in Belgium but became a citizen of France in 1955, where he lived the rest of his life. Has resale rights.
