The work is fully restored condition, the work has been relined, cleaned, restored & varnished approximately fifty years ago. There is extensive retouching throughout the composition, including the figure, face and background colour. The face and the ruff of the gentleman appear to be thin in places (e.g. overcleaning) The canvas is very taught indeed hence the old reline. There is evidence of more recent water damage in the top left hand corner to the right of the coat of arms.
