Ink and wax drawing on paper Signed, dedicated, titled and dated 1979 27x34 cm Modest Cuixart (Barcelona, 1925 – Palamós, 2007) was a prominent Spanish painter and a key figure in the post-war artistic movement in Catalonia. During the period from 1975 to 1985, Cuixart went through a mature phase in his artistic career, consolidating his style and delving into themes of strong emotional and symbolic intensity. This decade is characterized by a shift toward greater abstraction and a deeper exploration of texture and color. In his works from these years, Cuixart moved away from traditional figuration to embrace an abstraction rich in symbols and hidden meanings. His palette of vibrant, contrasting colors, together with the complex textures created through various techniques and materials, gave his compositions a notable tactile dimension and depth. Recurring themes in his work include nature, metamorphosis, and the human condition, reflecting a concern with existential and transcendental questions.
