Description & details
1937. The Sino-Japanese Hostilities. Shanghai [=cover title]. No place, no year (Shanghai, 1937). Oblong 8vo. 151 x 229 mm. 99 silver gelatin prints + 4 blood-red prints of night-time conflagrations. Print c. 80 x 60 mm. mounted on 24 leaves of stiff black paper. Album clad in moiréd black cloth, bound with tasselled black silk string, silver printed title and design on upper cover. Only slight wear to hinges and corners. Lacks table of contents and printed title. Probably from the Ah Fong studios, a smaller-format reissue of an album of the same title (but with partly different content) produced to document the fighting in Shanghai and the atrocities and destruction by the Japanese. The Chinese nationalist troops under Chiang Kai-Shek sought foreign assistance in their struggle, and this seems to have been an attempt to influence Western opinion.
