Beskrivning & detaljer
Erik A. Frandsen. b. 1957. 'Let there be light'. Ceiling pendant made of neon tubes in different colors and stainless steel. Island approx. 104 cm. Has dust and several defective fluorescent tubes. Wednesday auction The lamp has hung in the premises of the former auction house Lauritz.com on Dynamovej in Herlev. The lamp works except for the 2 tubes at the bottom. Erik A. Frandsen: 'It's an insanely complicated process, which I get help with at a glassblowing workshop in Herlev. It is an incredibly delicate job that very few people today manage to do. The neon tube, which is typically 2.2 meters long, is heated and bent centimeter by centimeter. When that work is done, electrodes, pipe holders and steel balls with mirror reflexes are attached - so that the lamps work and look exactly as I want them.' The lamps look delicious and eye-catching, but for Erik A. Frandsen, art is definitely not a matter of looking good: 'Decoration is fine enough, but for me things must have another dimension; they must spring from something else, something existential and substantial. On a painting, for example, you can add highlights at the end, which does look decorative, but for me the painting only works if the light flows out from the very inside; as from a powerful core. One way for me to achieve this quality in the things I work with is by always using the body as a starting point. Mentally, we can imagine all sorts of things, but without the bodily experiences we get nowhere, I think. The lamps, which are created from bodily movements, appeal – at best – to the mind, but via a clear bodily intervention,' says Erik A. Frandsen.
