Johannes Wilhjelm belongs to the generation of late Skagen painters, who, inspired by artists such as P.S. Krøyer and Michael Ancher, painted the grand landscape in and around Skagen. The present painting, with its subdued atmosphere and coloristic tone, clearly testifies to the inspiration from Anna Ancher's quiet interior depictions, but at the same time contains social realist elements that point in the direction of artists such as Brendekilde and L.A. Ring.
