Beskrivning & detaljer
Oil on canvas, 103 x 148 cm, including frame 108 x 153 cm. Signed and dated Gust. Wilh. Palm 1832. Gustav Lindgren's 1933 monograph describes the present catalogue number: “Merchant Garberg, orders in 1832 a larger oil painting by Palm, 'Utsigt af Gripsholms Slott' for which he receives funding of 40 Rdr from the Royal Academy of Fine Arts the following year. Garberg is apparently pleased with this, and to his delight the artist receives another order from his patron the same year - a 'Vue af Stockholm'. This large canvas shows a view of the city from Kungsklippan, whose rock formations are visible in the foreground. On the right is the tower of Kungsholm Church. Riddarholmen is in the centre of the canvas, where you can see, among other things, the Wrangel family palace and the house of Rosenhane family, beyond which the tower of Riddarholmskyrkan rises. Further to the left you can see Riddarhuset, the towers of the German Church and Storkyrkan, and on the far left the sunlit castle and Klara church tower. In the background you can see the houses on Södermalm and Katarina Church at the top of the hill. The realistic and romantic view at the same time is very interesting. Fahlcrantz's color scale is visible. The present owner of the painting, Chamberlord von Horn of Hjelmarsnäs, has placed a small typical Fahlcrantz under Palm's large canvas and it is really interesting to see how closely the disciple follows the teacher in all essentials...” (Gustav Lindgren, “Gustaf Wilhelm Palm 1810-1890", pp. 18). PROVENANCE Merchant Garberg, Gävle. (The painting was sold at auction on October 18, 1845 and bought again by the Garberg family). Chamberlord Robert von Horn (1879-1947), Hjelmarsnäs Örebro. LITERATURE Gustav Lindgren, Gustaf Wilhelm Palm 1810-1890, 1933, listed in the catalogue of works under 1832, p. 270, pictured pl. 7, also mentioned in text p. 18.
