Patinated bronze, Height 120 and 110 cm. From an edition of 3. Executed in 2011. UTSTÄLLD Lars Bohman Gallery, Stockholm, ”The Sadistic Skater, Part I”, 26 February - 20 March, 2011 (another cast was displayed). The Norwegian artist Bjarne Melgaard has become one of the most sought-after contemporary artists of the 21st century. Born in Australia but raised in Oslo, Melgaard studied at Norwegian National Academy of Fine Arts and later completed his studies at Rijksakademie in Amsterdam and at the Jan van Eyck Academie in Maastricht. His first solo show in New York featured sculptures of apes engaged in explicit sexual acts, establishing him as a world famous “bad boy” within the contemporary art scene. Melgaard is known for crossing boundaries and for taking inspiration from various provocative subcultures, such as S&M and Heavy metal music when creating his works of art. In 2011, Bjarne Melgaard exhibited paintings and sculptures at Lars Bohman Gallery in Stockholm under the name “The Sadistic Skater”. His own words in Dagens Industri Weekend told by Johanna Saldert: “Why Skater? Because I became interested in the street culture, in what moves people. At the same time, I want to show the commercial parts. Why Sadistic? Because there are traces of sadism involved in skateboard culture. They fall all the time and enjoy it. Having bruises is perceived as cool and a sign of painfulness”. The sculptures exhibited at Lars Bohman Gallery in 2011 caused a stir – almost meter tall figures with body proportions similar to those of children. They were all completely nude, standing in pairs embracing each other. Every other figure had small genitals and every other had enormous ones, functioning as a third leg. The sculpture included in this auction is one of the sculptures within this theme and was executed in 2010. It shows two separate figures, one of them placing his arm around the other one’s shoulders linking them together as one. They stand firm and one of them on three legs, the middle leg being the disproportionately large genital. Bjarne Melgaard is today represented in the permanent collections of many of the major museums worldwide, such as Museum of Modern Art in New York, Stedelijk Museum in Amsterdam and Moderna Museet in Stockholm. Has resale rights.
