Oil on canvas 53 x 35,5 cm. Signed Axel Jungstedt and dated 1886. Axel Jungstedt belonged to one of the artists who, during the 1880s and 1890s, took an intermediate position in the artistic politics of the time. He did not belong to the Opponents who wanted to break with the traditional currents, but he also did not stand on the side of the more conservative arts. Instead, with his technical skill Jungstedt came to balance the traditional technique which he mastered to the fullest with a keen interest in the possibilities and challenges of modern outdoor painting. Jungstedt studied at the Academy of Fine Arts 1878-1883. With his skill he was considered one of the greatest promises in his year class and his talent took him to Paris he came to be a pupil of the successful portrait painter William-Adolphe Bouguereau. During his years outside Sweden, he also made his way to Holland, Switzerland and Italy.
