Björck & Börjesson, Stockholm, Copyright. Fotograv. Gen. Stab. Lit. Anst. Sthlm. 1908. Plate mark 40 x 31 cm. The whole sheet 53,5 x 42 cm. Photo engraving (Fotogravyr). "Some of the best and most intriguing portraits of Strindberg was taken by Herman Anderson. The original to this photo engraving was executed in the autumn of 1908 and the copyright was then bought by Karl Börjesson who printed and sold it in conjunction with Strindbergs 60th birthday. On Strindbergs instruction several of Andersons photos were executed in natural size by a camera constructed by Strindberg himself, the "Wunderkamera". To preserve the soul of a human being the trick was to use as few lenses as possible and apply natural size plates in order to avoid enlargements or reductions. Strindberg believed that the essence of a persons soul could only be kept that way when photographing. With the support of Strindberg, Anderson executed a serie of photographs of members of the Art Academy which are of exquisite quality; Prince Eugen, Richard Berg, Christian Eriksson, Carl Eldh, Nils Kreuger, Carl Larsson, Bruno Liljefors, Karl Nordström and Anders Zorn. An interesting project Anderson helped Strindberg to accomplish was to photograph clouds above Djurgården in Stockholm in order to prove that the exact same cloud formation repeated itself at the same spot with regularity. Anderson is famous for his portrait of Bernhard Shaw taken at his vistit in Stockholm in 1908. Andersons and Strindbergs relationship shifted violently over the years until Anderson died in poverty 53 years old leaving a destitute family. Strindberg made sure that his family received economic support. The image is not listed in Svedfelt (Strindbergs Ansikte, 1948). (Further reading: Hemmingsson, Per. August Strindberg som fotograf, 1989.) A rare image.".
