Wall, Gunnar Löberg: The Overlooked Genius, 1952, illustrated picture 45 (reversed). “I am without direction and personal distinction. I may be allowed to be so when it comes to To reach higher values.” In Gunnar Löberg's painterly universe, reality is charged like nitroglycerine — constantly on the verge of exploding. The colors threaten to burst out of frame, challenging any traditional notion of what a palette can accommodate. Despite this intensity, the works also carry a tenderness—a low-key tone that gives the paintings a peculiar timbre amid the visual dissonance. Löberg's artworks carry a surprising presence, a contemporary feel that makes them difficult to time. In some respects, they appear more relevant today than at the time of their creation. His art avoids simple labels; although influences from traditional isms can be discerned — the disintegration and reconstruction of Cubism, the emotional charge of Expressionism, and the inward-looking imagery of Surrealism — these currents are reinterpreted in a deeply personal way. In the 1932 work "Spektrumbacillen", the artist's fascination, or perhaps concern, with the unseen is noticeable. But as when light is refracted through a prism and reveals its spectrum, Löberg's painting shows how even the unseen can be given shape - sometimes as color, sometimes as something more disturbing.
