Anton Michelsen: Equestrian statue of silver, depicting Christian IX. Mounted on a stand of ebonized wood, equipped with plaques and monogram of silver. Unique. Stamped AM for Anton Michelsen and Copenhagen city seal 1906. H. (incl. / excl. stand) 52 cm. / 34.5 cm. L. (incl. / excl. stand) 34.5 cm. / 27.5 cm. W. (incl. / excl. stand) 20 cm. / 9 cm. Weight: approx. 2,574 grams. The present equestrian statue was created on special order from the Duke and Duchess of Cumberland in connection with the death of Christian IX in 1906. Duchess Thyra, who was the youngest daughter of Christian IX and Queen Louise, married Ernst August of Cumberland in 1878, but maintained a close relationship with her Danish family throughout her life - not least to her father, the king - whom she and her husband often visited in Copenhagen and at Fredensborg. The visits to Denmark brought the Duke and Duchess into close contact with Christian IX's court marshal, Oscar Siegfried Christian O'Neill Oxholm, who was known for his amiable mind and gentle nature, around 1900. O'Neill Oxholm, who served as court marshal for Christian IX in the years 1898-1906, was very close to Christian IX, and it was in recognition of this that the ducal couple commissioned the present equestrian statue from A. Michelsen upon the king's death in 1906 as a gift to the retired court marshal.
