(3) Robert Jacobsen (1912–1993) is widely regarded as one of the most significant Danish artists of the 20th century. He is best known for his monumental sculptures, which have become an integral part of the Danish landscape and public realm. Throughout his career, however, drawing and graphic work played a central role in his artistic practice. Largely self-taught, Jacobsen initially worked with abstract and surrealist forms of expression, drawing inspiration from artists such as Kandinsky, Miró and Arp. In 1947, he moved to Paris together with Richard Mortensen, where he became part of the artistic circle surrounding Galerie Denise René and the Concrete Art movement. It was here that he developed a visual language characterised by rhythm, balance and a confident exploration of line and form. Graphic work offered Jacobsen an opportunity to investigate ideas and compositions in a more immediate manner than sculpture. His lithographs, etchings and copperplate prints reveal an artist constantly experimenting with form, colour and movement. These graphic works range from carefully structured abstractions to more playful and spontaneous compositions, yet all are united by the sense of energy and freedom that defines his artistic oeuvre. Today, Robert Jacobsen stands as a leading figure in Danish post-war art, and his graphic works constitute an important chapter in the story of an artist who continually sought new ways to challenge and expand his visual language throughout his life.
