About "Fågelskrämman" by Torsten Renqvist: “Inspiration was taken from a children's drawing and scarecrows Renqvist had seen travelling in Poland in 1966. The scarecrow is portrayed more as a friend with the birds that it is actually meant to scare him away. In the art journal Paletten 2-1972, Renqvist describes his relationship with scarecrows: “... I escaped the idea one day as I sat watching a children's drawing of a scarecrow, when the figure had been accepted by those he was supposed to keep away... In the hat of the scarecrow, the birds built nests, the figure had tired, but at the same time he gave the impression that by his failure he had acquired a new and positive feature. And in fact, this drawing seems to be naturally true. The birds of reality see through the deception of the scare in a day or two. After that, they find themselves right. For this reason among others, it suggests to me that the scares have never fulfilled the function inherent in the name. They are made by people and for people as they still compete today in Polish farmlands for the best figure. There the scares become ironies over decayed authority, the supremacy stands as the lazzaro of cultivation. But there is also a closeness to the primeval image of man, the pitiable, a closeness to the symbol of suffering, the image of Christ...” (Mailis Stensman, “Torsten Renqvist”, 2002, compare image p. 205) Has resale rights.
